Chapter 18—Darla

Leaving the babies with Tatum felt questionable, but what choice did they have? Schlep the babies on a boat to the mainland? It had already been a huge stressor just to bring them home. Newborns weren’t supposed to ride boats.

What about a friend? Maybe a neighbor could take Cadence to the hospital? No, Darla was being ridiculous. She was the logical driver, and Tatum the logical babysitter. Besides, if Darla really and truly wanted to return to work right after Christmas, she’d better start testing out babysitters. Not that Tatum was a long-term solution…

Or was she?

Darla shelved the thought and took over fifteen minutes to coach Tatum on everything from feeding with the pumped milk to diaper changes to swaddling to screen time all the way to what Tatum ought to do in another emergency. This potentiality freaked all three of them out—even to the point that Cadence resisted going at all. “I’m fine,” she growled once they’d gotten her bundled into a hat and scarf and her winter coat and boots. “If something happens to the babies, that’s a real emergency.”

“If something happens to the babies,” Darla decided with finality, “Tatum is to call 9-1-1 and demand that Birch Harbor send a chopper. There’s a helipad in the middle of the island just for this sort of thing. They don’t fool around with boats when there are actual emergencies. Tatum.” She held her sister’s shoulders and spoke so crisply and clearly that Tatum would surely know that her main priority was babysitting. Not the shelter. Not Angus and the other pets who still needed to be fed breakfast. The babies came first. “Is that crystal clear?”

“Crystal,” Tatum assured her.
